Three mountaineers have died on the Gran Paradiso, a four-thousander in the Italian Alps. The mountain rescue service discovered their bodies after an emergency call at an altitude of around 3,600 meters.
The group set off to the 4,061 meter high summit early in the morning after spending the night in a hut, but did not return until the evening. An alarm was then triggered at the control center.
According to the mountain rescue service, the climbers fell to their deaths on the north face. The exact circumstances are still unclear. According to official information, they are two Italians. The identity of the third fatality was not initially known.
The Gran Paradiso in the national park of the same name in northwestern Italy is considered one of the easiest four-thousanders in the Alps to climb. However, excellent physical and technical preparation are still mentioned as prerequisites. (sda/dpa)
