The Swiss flight LX 8253 was supposed to have flown from Ibiza to Zurich on Saturday. However, the flight was canceled and postponed to Sunday due to a medical emergency: a baby had collapsed during the taxiing of the previous landing, as 20 minutes reported on Sunday evening.
The pilot explained the situation via a loudspeaker announcement to the passengers who were now boarding their flight to Zurich on Sunday morning instead of Saturday evening:
«When we arrived here in Ibiza yesterday there was an emergency with a baby. The crew reacted immediately and began resuscitation. The baby was saved and then taken to the hospital in Ibiza in an ambulance.”
Following the incident, he decided not to travel home to Zurich until Sunday in order to protect the crew after this stressful situation.
Swiss confirmed the incident to 20minuten. Thanks to the crew’s quick resuscitation measures, the toddler was already conscious again when the medical emergency services arrived.
Last but not least, the successful rescue is also due to the passengers sitting nearby: “They behaved calmly and stayed seated. This meant that the helpers were able to look after the child as quickly as possible and without distraction, despite the hectic situation. In a situation like this, every second is valuable and we are grateful that the helpers were able to act immediately.”
Regarding the cancellation of the flight, Swiss noted that although the airline was very sorry for the circumstances for the passengers, it would not compromise on safety. (cpf)
