The proceedings against two young people who allegedly made threats against Zurich Pride in 2024 are still pending. One of the young people is in a closed facility.
The second teenager is still in a precautionary outpatient protective measure, as Patrik Killer, senior youth lawyer at the Zurich Youth Attorney’s Office, said on Monday at the request of Keystone-SDA. It is unclear when the proceedings will be completed.
The young people, then aged 14 and 17, were arrested in the run-up to Zurich Pride in June 2024. They are said to have made serious threats in the run-up to the event. The authorities never commented on the ideological background. According to various media reports, the two are said to have an Islamist background, like the attacker at Christoper Street Day (CSD) on Saturday in Berlin.
Security measures increased
A 21-year-old drove into people on Saturday evening in Berlin’s Tiergarten on the edge of the CSD. He then attacked other passers-by with a type of machete. One woman died in the attack and 29 other people suffered injuries, some of them serious. On Sunday, police officers shot and killed the suspected attacker.
The threats in Zurich were noticeable at Pride. What was noticeable in 2024 was the relatively high security precautions at the largest Swiss demonstration by and for queer people. Barriers were set up around Helvetiaplatz so that no vehicles could drive onto the square. There were also police officers with submachine guns on site. (sda)
