US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has described European discussions about a naval deployment to secure the Strait of Hormuz as “stupid”.
“These are not yet serious efforts,” he said at a press conference about last week’s talks.
Hegseth complained that the Europeans had talked about “perhaps doing something at some point when everything is done.” The minister took up the ongoing criticism of US President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly called for significantly more commitment from European allies in securing the Strait of Hormuz.
Hegseth: “You saw the I would call it a silly conference in Europe last week, where they got together and talked about talking about maybe doing something eventually when things are done. Those are not serious efforts yet.” pic.twitter.com/LcWqXcRgNw

In his statement, Hegseth did not address the planning meeting at which military officers from 30 countries had met at the British military headquarters Northwood in London since Wednesday. Great Britain and France want to organize a neutral naval operation that is clearly separated from the warring parties in order to accompany and secure merchant ships. Germany is considering contributing to mine clearance and maritime reconnaissance. (sda/dpa)
