Mediator Pakistan has not yet confirmed speculation about further negotiations between Iran and the USA. The country has “maintained open channels of communication with the parties concerned,” said a foreign ministry spokesman in Islamabad.
The DPA news agency learned from diplomatic circles that a new date for talks between the warring parties would only be set after the return of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday.
Sharif has been on a multi-day trip since Wednesday that will take him to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in the Iranian capital Tehran on Wednesday for talks. Munir is considered one of the most influential mediators between the USA and Iran.
Trump promises second round of negotiations
A ceasefire between the USA and Iran is in effect until next Wednesday. Initial negotiations in Islamabad between the warring parties ended last weekend without a result. US President Donald Trump recently announced the prospect of a second round of negotiations. “Something could happen in the next two days,” he told the New York Post on Wednesday, but gave no further details.
