Iran’s judiciary has once again executed a man on espionage charges. As the justice portal “Misan” reported, the man was accused of recruiting people for the Israeli secret service. After confirmation by the Supreme Court, the sentence was carried out by hanging.

The human rights organization Hengaw, based in Norway, spoke of a 34-year-old former athlete and political prisoner. The man, who comes from the Iranian city of Ardabil, actually lived in Turkey and was arrested by Iranian security forces while traveling in Iraq.
The organization criticized that he did not have access to a lawyer of his choice. The court proceedings were not transparent. His brother is also imprisoned in Iran, the report from last week said.
In recent months, men have been repeatedly executed who Iran’s judiciary accuses of having connections to Israeli intelligence. In addition, a wave of executions in connection with the mass protests in January continues.
The human rights organization Amnesty International reported at least 2,159 executions in Iran last year – a new high since 1981. In the Islamic Republic, the death penalty is used to politically suppress and intimidate the population, the organization wrote in a report last week. (dab/sda/dpa)
