After an Islamist-motivated knife attack on a Spanish tourist at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office today arrested a suspected aide of the already convicted perpetrator.
The Syrian is strongly suspected of being an accessory to attempted murder and grievous bodily harm, the highest German prosecution authority in Karlsruhe said.
The assistant is said to have encouraged the main perpetrator in his plan
The 37-year-old is accused of being in contact with a Syrian who has since been convicted of the crime and of encouraging him to carry out the attack the afternoon before the crime. No further details were initially provided. The man was scheduled to be brought before a judge this morning.
The then 19-year-old Syrian, who had already been convicted of the attack, attacked the tourist in the stelae field of the Holocaust memorial with a knife on the evening of February 21, 2025 and critically injured him. The victim barely survived.
For this he was sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Berlin Court of Appeal in March of this year. He was found guilty, among other things, of attempted murder and attempted membership in a terrorist organization abroad. (sda/dpa)
