In the Philippines, the Mayon volcano has erupted, covering its surroundings with thick ash.

A total of 52 villages around the volcano have been affected since Saturday, the PNA agency reported, citing the authorities. The first lava flows flowed downhill.

Fire brigades and relief teams were sent to the region to support the population. “Our teams are already on site and are providing support to the affected communities while coordinating the operation with the relevant government agencies and local civil defense associations,” fire department spokesman Achilles Santiago was quoted as saying.
Mayon is a 2,462 meter high volcano in the Philippines, about 330 kilometers southeast of the capital Manila. The volcano, which erupts repeatedly, is located in the Bicol region on the southeastern foothills of the main island of Luzon. He has shown increased activity since the beginning of the year.
Since the latest eruption on Saturday, 45 earthquakes and 32 tremors have been recorded from the volcano. (sda/dpa)
