Despite an agreed ceasefire, Lebanese media report numerous Israeli air strikes with many deaths. The Lebanese Civil Defense announced that 16 bodies had been recovered in the city of Nabatija alone.
According to the state news agency NNA, three people were killed in attacks by warplanes on the town of Arabsalim in the Nabatiya area. Another woman died in an attack in the Tire area. The Israeli military also shelled the city of Nabatija and its suburbs.
According to the Lebanese army, a military member died in an airstrike on the road between Kfar Remaneh and Nabatija. The army accused Israel of using its attacks to prevent any solution that would restore stability in Lebanon.
All information cannot currently be independently verified. The Israeli army has not yet commented.
According to a US government official, a ceasefire has actually been in effect since Friday 4 p.m. local time (3 p.m./CEST). This was broken several times just a few minutes after it came into force.
Israel’s army spokesman Effie Defrin said, according to the daily newspaper “The Times of Israel”, that despite the ceasefire with Hezbollah, the troops had “full freedom of action” to act against any threat in any area. There are no restrictions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously said Israel would not tolerate attacks on its soldiers or territory.
The military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is straining negotiations between the US government and Iran. A bilateral framework agreement actually provides for a ceasefire on all fronts – including in Lebanon. (hkl/sda/dpa)
