As British media reported before the highly anticipated speech, he will describe the US-British connection as a story of “reconciliation and renewal.” In addition, in his speech expected this afternoon (local time), he will speak of “one of the most important alliances in human history”.
Charles is only the second monarch after his mother Queen Elizabeth II to address Congress.
Despite some differences in the past, the allies’ shared traditions have meant that “our two countries have continually found ways to come together,” the manuscript of the speech reportedly says. Relations in the areas of defense, intelligence and security are “measured not in years, but in decades”.
The royal couple was received on Monday by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for the multi-day state visit to Washington, which is considered a diplomatic balancing act. Trump, who is considered a big fan of the British royals, has recently repeatedly criticized the British government for, among other things, what he sees as a lack of support in the Iran war. In London it is hoped that the king can steer the relationship in a positive direction again. (dab/sda/dpa)
