The Bundestag member and former CDU treasurer Franziska Hoppermann is to become the new general secretary of her party.
The German Chancellor and party leader Friedrich Merz proposed it at a meeting of the Presidium of the Christian Democrats in Berlin, as the German Press Agency learned from participants. The Hamburg resident is to succeed Carsten Linnemann, who is to become Minister of Health.
Franziska Hoppermann is no stranger to the CDU, but she is to the broader public. But that will now change. Because as general secretary of the party, the woman from Hamburg will inevitably be in the public eye. As federal treasurer, she has previously worked in the background, but was also a member of the CDU executive committee.
The business graduate has been sitting in the Bundestag for the Hamburg-Wandsbek constituency since 2021. She is a member of the Budget Committee and the Committee for Digital Affairs and State Modernization. She also heads the Corona Study Commission, which is intended to help Germany better prepare for possible pandemics. (sda/dpa)
