After the alleged misuse of EU funds by members of the former right-wing nationalist European Parliament group ID, a majority of other MPs are calling for quicker consequences.

A motion passed in the plenary session stipulates that the parliamentary administration should, if possible, immediately reclaim reimbursable expenses.
In addition, the possible liability of the responsible MPs due to intentional or grossly negligent approval of unlawful expenditure should be determined. Until now, the Parliament’s administration had wanted to wait and see how ongoing investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into the case would turn out.
Auditors from the parliamentary administration came to the conclusion that members of the ID parliamentary group had improperly used at least 4.3 million euros (around 4 million francs) from EU funds in the last legislative period. According to their report, the money went, among other things, to companies close to the parliamentary group and to associations that support abortion opponents.
The now dissolved ID faction included, among others, the German AfD – the second strongest force in the Bundestag in Berlin. With the start of the new legislative period in the EU Parliament, the German right-wing populists have joined forces with other right-wing parties in the ESN parliamentary group. The other ID members such as the French Rassemblement National, the Austrian FPÖ and the Italian Lega have come together to form the PfE parliamentary group in the new legislative period.
