Hardly any other production is currently under as much scrutiny as the upcoming new edition of “Harry Potter”. HBO is snapping up the mega-franchise and turning it into a streaming series.
The expectations and hopes from the fan community are correspondingly high. Even before the first episode has even flickered across the screens, there are discussions about the young stars of the production.
Because decades after the first “Harry Potter” film, the popular roles of Harry, Hermione, Ron and Co. are being completely recast. That’s exactly why Daniel Radcliffe is now sending an urgent wish to the fans of the franchise.
“Harry Potter” star advocates for new cast
With the HBO series, the story of Harry Potter gets a new coat of paint. JK Rowling’s novels are intended to be retold and reinterpreted over several years. An ambivalent affair for fans of the celebrated film series – After all, the new stars of the reboot have big shoes to fill.
Dominic McLaughlin will take on the role of Harry, while Alastair Stout will star as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton will star alongside him as Hermione Granger. When the cast was announced, many people called for people to pay attention to the young actors.
Against the background of the ongoing debates about their casting, the former Harry, Daniel Radcliffe, is now making a specific request to all fans. If they are really serious about protecting the new stars, “you would do me a favor if you don’t keep asking me about us – me, Emma and Rupert.”
The 36-year-old doesn’t want the former leading actresses to float around like “strange, ghostly figures in children’s lives.” The series will stand on its own to a certain extent and be “something new”. Ultimately, Radcliffe wants the three of them to have the opportunity to put their own stamp on the characters.
“Harry Potter” reboot is already polarizing
It is not the first time that the actor has spoken publicly about the reboot. In the past he had already assured the new generation of “Harry Potter” stars his full support.
Among other things, he even wrote the trio a personal letter in which he wished them “a lot of fun” and emphasized how special and surreal it was to see new faces in the roles.
However, the discussions about the casting of the popular characters have not been entirely positive so far. Both Arabella Stanton and Paapa Essiedu, who will play Severus Snape in the HBO series, have already been targeted racist hostilities. Statements about which former “Harry Potter” stars Jason Isaacs and Nick Frost, among others, took a critical stance.
