Shells, driftwood or lost flip-flops usually wash up on Australian beaches. In Queensland, several mysterious metal balls suddenly lay in the sand. And the case is so strange that even the Australian Space Agency is now looking into it.
Again “Guardian» reported that a total of six spherical objects were found in the Forrest Beach area near Townsville. The authorities are currently examining whether it could be space debris. The items found may not be entirely harmless: the police warned that they could contain dangerous chemicals.
The Queensland Fire Department also responded. Five of the objects have already been secured and a sixth is currently being rendered harmless. The authorities said there is currently no danger to the population. At the same time, it cannot be ruled out that more parts will wash up on the coast in the coming days.
Origin open
Where the bullets came from is still unclear. An expert on space debris told the Guardian that the finds could be so-called “space balls”. This refers to pressure vessels from rocket systems that can fall back to earth after a launch. Such parts are often made of particularly heat-resistant material and can be found years after a rocket launch.

According to the expert, if these were indeed rocket parts, they could have contained residues of hydrazine – a highly toxic rocket fuel. But this has not been confirmed. It is also possible that the objects have nothing to do with space travel.
In Forrest Beach, the discovery is also being treated with Australian humor. A local snack bar is already selling a “Space Junk Snack Box”. On a board he advertises that these objects – unlike some things that wash up on the beach – can at least be identified.
The authorities are likely to hope that they will soon be able to do the same with the real bullets.
