In view of an impending advance by the RSF militia on the Sudanese town of Al-Obeid, members of the UN Security Council are warning of atrocities and an even worsening humanitarian catastrophe. The most powerful body in the United Nations called on the militia not to launch a ground offensive to take the large city in Kordofan state. A civil war has been raging in Sudan for more than three years.
Only on Thursday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed to the international community to influence the parties to the conflict in order to avoid further bloodshed. He warned that atrocities should not occur again in Al-Obeid, as occurred when the RSF militia took Al-Fashir in Darfur at the end of last year. According to the UN Human Rights Office, more than 6,000 people were killed within three days.
In the Sudanese civil war, the government army SAF of de facto ruler Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan and the militia RSF under Mohamed Hamdan Daglo are fighting for dominance in the country. The UN speaks of the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. More than 11.5 million people have been displaced by the war, and around half of the country’s population is at risk of hunger. Human rights organizations accuse both parties to the conflict of serious crimes. (sda/dpa)
