Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused the US of interfering in her country’s internal affairs. “And Mexico, let me say it loud and clear: we do not accept any interference. We are a free, independent and sovereign country,” Sheinbaum said at a rally to mark the second anniversary of her election victory in front of supporters in the Mexican capital Mexico City.
The president said that an agency of the US Department of Justice had requested the arrest of ten Mexicans for extradition. According to them, they include a governor, a mayor and a sitting senator. She did not give names or further details. The President’s information could not initially be independently verified.
Sheinbaum: “Mexico is nobody’s piñata”
When foreigners determine who is guilty and who is not, or put pressure on Mexican institutions, it is no longer a question of cooperation but of interference, said Sheinbaum. “Mexico is nobody’s piñata,” she added. A piñata can be a figure that children usually hit with sticks until candy falls out.
The president called on her supporters to hold information events in public places in the coming weeks. There should be information about the defense of national sovereignty.
The statements come at a time when the topic of foreign influence in elections in Mexico is being increasingly discussed. Only recently, parliament approved a constitutional reform supported by the ruling Morena party, which would allow elections to be canceled in the event of proven foreign interference. In Mexico, the two chambers of Congress will be re-elected in a year. (sda/dpa)
