The G7 summit in Evian on the French side of Lake Geneva is approaching. Questions of security and organization were therefore the focus of the meeting between Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis and his French counterpart, Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, on Friday evening in Geneva.
The G7 summit in Evian is an important moment for Europe and the whole world, Cassis told the Keystone-SDA news agency after the one-on-one meeting. The summit will take place from June 15th to 17th.
«We are proud that international Geneva can help organize such an event perfectly and ensure safety. We are also proud to help our French neighbors with this event, which is of great importance in a world as radical as the one we are experiencing today,” emphasized the Ticino native.
Cassis acknowledged that the G7 summit was causing fears in Switzerland, particularly in Geneva. Such a meeting has already taken place once in Evian: in 2003 – as a G8 summit involving Russia. At that time, rioters caused massive damage to property during protests in Geneva. According to the Geneva authorities, rioters from abroad were also involved in the riots.
The Federal Council has already responded to security concerns in connection with the G7 summit in Evian: Switzerland will carry out controls again on the border with France from June 10th to 19th. The state government has approved a corresponding request from the Canton of Geneva.
At the beginning of April, the state government had already decided that the federal government would contribute to the security costs of the three cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais affected by the G7 summit. (sda)
