According to information from Kiev, the USA wants to contribute $100 million to repair the containment shell over the accident reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that collapsed around 40 years ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media about an important step of support from the US and thanked the country.
Zelensky explained that more than 500 million euros were needed for repairs after a Russian drone damaged the steel arch above the accident reactor last year. Ukraine is working with its partners to achieve this. Every contribution brings this goal closer.
On April 26, 1986, a test at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the then Soviet Republic of Ukraine got out of control and the worst possible accident occurred. Attenuated radioactive clouds spread to northern and western Europe. The disaster marked the 40th anniversary last Sunday. The Russian war of aggression, which has been going on for more than four years, poses a new danger to the nuclear ruins. (sda/dpa)
