The Democratic governor of California, Gavin Newsom, sees growing European determination to counter US President Donald Trump. “I think Europe feels more united today than it has for a long time,” said Newsom during his second appearance at the Munich Security Conference. And that is perhaps Trump’s only merit. He attacked him again in the strongest possible terms.
Among other things, Newsom criticized the controversial actions of the US immigration authority ICE in the United States. People suddenly disappeared; two people were recently shot.

“Our immune system has been woken up”
The immune system has now been woken up – this applies to the American people and increasingly to the rest of the world. Trump exploits weakness – that is his strength. But he reacts differently to conviction, character and determination when someone makes a decisive statement. This was also reflected in the speech by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Munich. Rubio reached out to Europe in his eagerly awaited speech, but also made demands.
“He took over the Republican Party.”
Newsom criticized that under Trump the USA had become the largest source of instability in the world. Old values are being destroyed by Trump in real time. “Our republic is being destroyed in real time,” warned the US Democrat. And, he doesn’t say this about Trump lightly: “He is an invasive species. He took over the Republican Party.”
Nevertheless, Newsom predicted that the Republicans under Trump would be defeated in the midterm elections in the fall: they would be crushed, the governor predicted. Newsom himself is considered a possible presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in 2028. (sda/dpa)
