There have been two earthquakes in central Greece. According to the Geodynamic Institute in Athens, two consecutive tremors were registered in the region of the island of Euboea (Evia), which were also clearly felt in the capital Athens, around 90 kilometers south.
The first earthquake reached a magnitude of 4.8 and occurred on Sunday at 12:58 p.m. (local time) in the area of the small town of Mantoudi. The center was around five kilometers deep. A second quake with a magnitude of 5.2 followed shortly afterwards in the same region. According to local media reports, this put the population in fear.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in Greece
There were initially no reports of major damage or injuries. However, there were numerous smaller landslides, it was said. The authorities began to take stock, as local mayors reported on the radio.

Greece lies in a seismically active zone in which the African and Eurasian plates are shifting against each other. This means that earthquakes, sometimes noticeable, occur again and again, even in densely populated areas such as the region around Athens. (sda/dpa)
