A twelve-year-old boy died in an avalanche accident in Austria.
As a mountain rescue spokesman reported, a family had dared to ski downhill outside the groomed slopes on the 2,700-meter-high Kreuzkogel near Bad Gastein. A slab of snow came loose in a gully and buried the boy. The attempt to resuscitate the child was aborted after 45 minutes. According to the Gasteiner Bergbahnen, the victim comes from Ukraine.
According to the expert, the current snow situation is often explosive. The new snow has no stable connection to the old snow. “Slabs of snow kept coming loose even without any stress,” said Roland Pfund, spokesman for the Bad Gastein mountain rescue service. (sda/dpa)
