A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Japan, according to the US Earthquake Observatory USGS. The Japanese disaster control agency issued a tsunami warning and warned of waves that could be up to three meters high, according to Platform X.
Shortly afterwards, tidal waves of up to 80 centimeters were reported on the coast of the northeastern prefecture of Iwate, as the Japanese TV station NHK reported.
No irregularities were found in the Fukushima Daichi nuclear ruins or in the nuclear power plants in Miyagi and Aomori prefectures, the Japanese news agency Kyodo reported, citing the operators.
Authorities urged anyone near coastal areas, rivers or lakes to immediately move to higher ground.
