The US migration agency ICE, known for its controversial deportation raids, is to have a new head. US President Donald Trump nominated Lance Schroyer for the director position, as he announced on the Truth Social platform. Trump called on the Senate in Congress to approve the personnel.
Schroyer is a former Oklahoma state trooper and former Marine. Trump called him a patriot. According to the TV channel CNN, Schroyer is hardly known in the USA. The position became vacant after it was announced months ago that acting director Todd Lyons was resigning.
The ICE agency became a symbol of the aggressive migration policy of Trump’s second term, which began in January 2025. The authority was responsible for controversial raids against migrants in democratically governed cities. Some of the officers were masked. The procedure triggered a large wave of protests in the USA.
The headwind for Trump became really severe when two US citizens died in Minneapolis in January when they were shot by federal officers from various authorities during such operations. (sda/dpa)
