US President Donald Trump welcomed the British royal couple in Washington. Trump received King Charles III. (77) and Queen Camilla (78) together with his wife Melania in sunny weather at the south entrance to the White House. Charles and Camilla had arrived in the USA a few hours earlier.
The royal couple’s trip is also in the light of the recently tense British-American relations following differences over the Iran war. Charles wants to speak before the US Congress this Tuesday.

Trump: Charles “very safe”
After the shooting at the correspondents’ dinner in Washington, plans for the state visit were revised at the last minute, but the trip went ahead as planned. Trump assured the monarch that he would be “very safe” on the White House grounds.
The royal couple will travel to New York later this week. There, the royals want to meet, among other things, rescue workers and relatives of victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001. The last stop on the USA trip is Virginia, where Charles and Camilla want to meet with representatives of the Native Americans. (sda/dpa)
