According to US media reports, US President Donald Trump is frustrated by Iran’s delaying tactics in negotiations towards a possible end to the war. Like, among other things CNN reports that Trump is now seriously considering resuming “major combat operations”.
The Iranian regime recently rejected a US proposal to end the war, describing it in state media as a “call for surrender”. Trump then described the Iranian reaction as “completely unacceptable.” He is now said to be questioning Iran’s willingness to engage in serious negotiations.
On Tuesday night (Swiss time) he doubled down in Washington and described Iran’s response as a “stupid suggestion”. That’s why the current ceasefire is “weaker than ever after reading this crap.”
In fact, Iran does not seem to have much interest in a negotiated solution. As the Iranians continue to have great influence over the Strait of Hormuz and the war is increasingly unpopular in the US, time is against Trump and for the Iranian regime.
According to CNN sources, there are also different points of view within the US government. While some advocate renewed attacks to force Iran to the negotiating table, others are said to continue to favor a diplomatic solution.
According to the news portal Axios, Trump and several cabinet members such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio as well as military representatives such as Chief of Staff Dan Caine will discuss how to proceed in a special meeting on Monday evening (US time).
According to CNN sources, there are also doubts among US officials that mediator Pakistan is not communicating clearly enough with the Iranians. The USA and Iran have not communicated directly in the negotiations so far, but, at least according to official reports, only through intermediaries from Pakistan. According to the report, representatives from Trump’s environment believe that Pakistan is presenting the Iranian position to the USA more positively than it actually is. (con)
