US President Donald Trump has confirmed the end of the ceasefire in the Iran war. The United States had made it clear to Iran that the ceasefire was “OVER,” he wrote on the Truth Social platform. At the same time, he left the door open for discussions. Trump wrote specifically that Tehran had asked for talks to continue. Trump put the word conversations in quotation marks. He further wrote that this had been agreed to.
Already mentioned the end of the ceasefire
Trump had already declared at the NATO summit this week that, in his view, the ceasefire was over. Trump said in Ankara that he would let his negotiators continue to talk to Iran if they wish. Trump was first asked whether the ceasefire was over – and when the reporter asked him a second time whether the ceasefire and the framework agreement with Iran were now history.
Trump responded: “I think it’s over. I don’t want anything to do with them anymore. They are scum.” He considers it a complete waste of time to deal with Iranian representatives. “They’re liars,” Trump complained.
More attacks in the Middle East
Since then, the situation in the Middle East has escalated again. The US military had repeatedly bombed targets in Iran in response to attacks against tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The USA is also reinstating sanctions on Iranian oil. Iran, for its part, responded with attacks. Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, which host important US military bases, also came under fire again.
Washington and Tehran agreed on a framework agreement in mid-June in efforts to end the war. This was supposed to be the starting point for in-depth negotiations – but the talks had already stalled before the most recent attacks. (sda/dpa)
