Also looks a bit “shut down”: US President Donald Trump.Image: keystone
US President Donald Trump has called on Parliament to end the government shutdown that has been ongoing since Saturday with a budget vote. The Republican announced on the Truth Social platform that he would then sign the financing package IMMEDIATELY. The country cannot endure another long shutdown.

A shutdown occurs when the budget expires and no follow-up financing has been decided. In November, the longest shutdown in US history ended after 43 days.
The background to the new dispute is the financing of the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the raids against migrants by masked federal officers. In January, two US citizens were killed in two attacks in Minneapolis.
The other chamber of parliament, the Senate, passed a compromise on Friday. Several budget bills were approved, and there should be a transitional solution for the Department of Homeland Security. The House of Representatives still has to agree for Trump to sign it. A vote is not expected before Tuesday. (cpf/sda/dpa)
