US President Donald Trump has declared the end of hostilities in Iran in a letter to the US Congress. There have been no fighting between Iran and the USA since the ceasefire began on April 7th, according to a letter from the White House signed by Trump and available to the German Press Agency. “The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 have ended.”

Trump’s statements are also relevant because the window in which he is still allowed to wage war theoretically expires at the weekend. According to the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the president can command the offensive for a maximum of 60 days – then he needs the formal approval of Parliament.

Trump: Adjust troop levels if necessary

The letter, addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson, continued: “Despite the success of United States operations against the Iranian regime and ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace, the threat Iran poses to the United States and our armed forces remains significant.” Accordingly, the Ministry of Defense will continue to adjust its troop presence in the region if necessary.

He will continue to inform Congress about his actions in accordance with legal requirements. (sda/dpa)
