The “Top Gun” series is entering the next round. As the studio Paramount Pictures confirms, the script for a third part is currently being worked on. Lead actor Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are also said to be on board again.
Cruise once again slips into his signature role as pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell – a character he already played in the original film from 1986 and in the successful sequel from 2022.
Project is slowly taking shape
There is currently no specific start date or details about the cast. What is clear, however, is that work on the film has been going on for some time. Ehren Kruger, who was already involved in the second part, is once again responsible for the script.
Director Christopher McQuarrie, who worked on “Top Gun: Maverick,” is also said to be involved in the development. The story for the third part has already been largely worked out.
High expectations after mega success
The pressure for the sequel is great. “Top Gun: Maverick” became one of the most successful films in recent years in 2022, grossing around $1.5 billion worldwide. This made the sequel the biggest box office success of Tom Cruise’s career.
It remains to be seen whether the third part can build on this success. One thing is certain: Cruise is taking off again – and expectations are correspondingly high. (mke)
