After the severe double earthquake in Venezuela a week and a half ago, the death toll has risen to at least 2,954. In addition, 16,592 injuries have now been registered, as the President of the National Assembly, Jorge RodrÃguez, announced.
Almost 200 buildings collapsed
According to official information, 190 buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquakes and another 856 were severely damaged. More than 16,000 people lost their homes. Authorities have also recorded 942 aftershocks since the two devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24.
Although the chances of finding further survivors are now considered very low, the emergency services are continuing their search for those buried. Just on Thursday, a man was rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed shopping center in the coastal town of MaiquetÃa. The rescue workers had previously maintained contact with the victim for days and provided him with water and other essential items. (sda/dpa)
