After the severe floods in southern China, the death toll has continued to rise. According to authorities, 39 people were killed in the Guangxi region and nine others were missing, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Authorities had previously reported six dead and eleven missing.

The floods were triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall brought by a tropical storm. The area around Hengzhou, which is part of the metropolis of Nanning, was particularly affected. The rains caused a dam to burst there. The situation also remained tense on other rivers and reservoirs.

The next storm is already approaching
The storms had also hit other parts of China in the past few days. In the northwest of the country, 21 people died in a landslide near the city of Longnan in Gansu province. Severe thunderstorms and a tornado killed at least eleven people in the central Chinese province of Hubei. The weather situation remained tense. Chinese authorities warned of additional flood risks from further rainfall and the approaching typhoon “Bavi”. (dab/sda/dpa)
