According to activists, ten members of a regional military unit were killed in unrest in western Iran. The incident occurred in the city of Kermanshah during clashes with insurgents, Norway-based human rights group Hengaw reported.
The security forces belonged to the so-called Nabi Akram unit, which reports to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and is used to suppress protests. There was initially no confirmation from the state or the military.
On Thursday evening, Iran experienced the largest demonstrations since the current wave of protests began. The Iranian security apparatus completely shut down the Internet for the population. After security forces allegedly opened fire on demonstrators, unconfirmed reports of numerous deaths increased. Before Thursday, there were the most violent protests against the Iranian government in Kermanshah and in the west of the country. (sda/dpa)
