Swiss Solidarity is holding a fundraising campaign for the earthquake victims in Venezuela on Thursday. The national solidarity day will be opened by Federal President Guy Parmelin.
Together with the SRG stations and private radios, Swiss Solidarity is calling for solidarity with the people of Venezuela, as the organization announced on Thursday. Volunteers and well-known personalities accept donations all day long at the telephone exchanges in Zurich, Geneva, Lugano and Chur.
The severe earthquakes in Venezuela last week are believed to have cost thousands of lives. Most recently there was talk of at least 2,295 deaths. According to the latest authorities, 11,267 people were injured. Numerous people are missing. Around 6,500 people were rescued alive.
Houses, streets, hospitals and other important infrastructure were destroyed or seriously damaged, the Swiss Solidarity wrote about its campaign. The humanitarian needs are enormous: medical care, emergency shelter, clean drinking water and food are urgently needed, as are everyday goods.
