At risk of exploding: A storage tank in Southern California.Image: keystone
The impending explosion of a storage tank containing a flammable, hazardous chemical has led to a large-scale evacuation in Southern California. Around 40,000 residents in the greater Garden Grove area, southeast of Los Angeles, are affected by the call, US media reported. Authorities said the emergency could cause a leak to occur or the tank to explode.

The chemical methyl methacrylate is highly toxic and highly flammable, said Craig Covey of the Orange County Fire Department. The tank with the liquid used in the production of plastics is located on the premises of an aerospace company. In the worst case scenario, an uncontrolled explosion could occur, Covey explained.
Meanwhile, the tank was cooled from the outside with water to prevent it from heating up further. A defective valve caused additional problems. (sda/dpa)
