Another four residents of the city were injured, said Alexei Likhachev, head of the Russian nuclear agency Rosatom, and the Moscow-appointed regional governor Yevgeny Balitsky. The information could not be independently verified.
According to the state agency Tass, Likhachev accused European politicians and organizations of “hiding behind the cloak of European political correctness” or “simply ignoring” the attacks against Enerhodar. According to his account, at least eleven residents have died in Ukrainian attacks in the city since the end of April.
Enerhodar, with an original population of around 53,000, is located near the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The nuclear power plant is considered the largest employer of the city’s residents.
With six reactors and a nominal output of 6,000 megawatts, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant has been under Russian control since March 2022. It is currently not producing electricity. Several Ukrainian attempts to recapture it failed. A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is constantly on site to monitor the situation and use its presence to prevent a nuclear accident. (sda/dpa)
