In Ukraine, parliament confirmed the new Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyj. A clear majority of 289 MPs voted in favor of the appointment. 226 were necessary.
Koretskyj previously headed the state energy company Naftogaz. One of the 48-year-old’s most important tasks is to prepare the country for the next winter of war.
Protests against the dismissal of Defense Minister Fedorov
In the morning, hundreds of mostly young people demonstrated in Kiev and other cities against the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The 35-year-old is considered a reformer and a fighter against widespread corruption in the state apparatus. The day before it became known that President Volodymyr Zelenskyj would not propose him as defense minister again due to a conflict with army chief Olexander Syrskyj.
The previous Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko is considered his successor. Zelenskyj has not yet submitted his candidacy to parliament. According to the constitution, the president has the right to propose the positions of foreign and defense ministers.
Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for more than four years. After Denys Shmyhal and Yulia Svyrydenko, who resigned on Tuesday, Koretskyj is the third head of government during the war. (sda/dpa)
