A Russian artist and Putin critic was shot dead on the street in eastern Poland. Several shots were fired at the 44-year-old, a police spokesman for the Lublin Voivodeship told the Polish news agency PAP. The crime scene was the town of Biala Podlaska, which is about 35 kilometers from the border with Belarus.
According to the events, it looks like a planned killing, said the police spokesman. “But we don’t yet know the perpetrator’s motive,” he said. The shooter could not be caught.
While the Polish police did not name any names, Russian and Belarusian opposition media identified the dead man as a performance artist and cartoonist. He made a name for himself with mocking drawings of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko and Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. He had been living in exile in Poland since 2021. (sda/dpa)
