The right-wing conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori narrowly won the presidential election in Peru after the lengthy vote count was completed. The 51-year-old received 50.13 percent of the vote, as the South American country’s electoral office announced more than three weeks after the runoff election on June 7th. The left-wing politician Roberto Sánchez received 49.86 percent.
Just 49,641 votes separated the opponents in a country with 27 million eligible voters. Fujimori wrote on Platform Her opponent had previously announced that she would not recognize the election results.
Daughter of convicted former President Alberto Fujimori
Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights violations and has already died. The politician from the conservative Fuerza Popular party ran for president for the fourth time. She has announced that she will take tough action against organized crime. She also plans to deregulate the economy. She will take office on July 28th.
The political situation in the country with around 35 million inhabitants is characterized by constant conflict between parliament and the government. Congress can remove presidents from office for “moral incompetence.” Peru has had eight presidents in the past ten years. (sda/dpa)
