The complete closure of the Brenner Pass to transit traffic has been in force since 11 a.m. The closure lasts until 7 p.m. on the Austrian side and until 8 p.m. on the Italian side. It applies to the Brenner motorway and all secondary routes. The reason for the closure is a protest on the Brenner Motorway. Residents of the region want to demonstrate against the flood of traffic there.
According to motorway operator Asfinag, almost eleven million cars and around 2.5 million trucks used the toll motorway in 2025. This makes the route the busiest north-south connection in the Alps.
The police had called for people to avoid Tyrol during the closure. This is intended to avoid traffic chaos. In the hours before the closure, traffic moved over the Brenner Pass and through Tyrol with virtually no problems. Traffic experts spoke of a surprisingly calm traffic situation. (sda/dpa)
