The Parliament of Moldova has elected financial expert Vasile Tofan as the new Prime Minister. The MPs from President Maia Sandu’s pro-Western ruling Action and Solidarity party voted for the 44-year-old, as the Moldpress news agency in Chisinau reported.
Tofan succeeds Alexandru Munteanu, who unexpectedly resigned at the beginning of July after just eight months in office. According to Moldovan media reports, the background was several scandals, which not only had to do with the government, but also with the president’s entourage.
The poor agricultural state between Ukraine and EU member Romania has been a candidate for accession to the European Union since 2022. A predominantly Russian-inhabited part of the country on the Dniester River has been separated for more than 30 years and is considered Moscow’s outpost in the region. (sda/dpa)
