US singer Britney Spears has admitted her guilt of driving under the influence of alcohol. The 44-year-old admitted this through her lawyer in Ventura County, California, without appearing in court in person. In return for the guilty plea, the public prosecutor’s office offered a settlement. Spears thus avoids a harsher punishment. She received a one-year suspended sentence and must adhere to several conditions. This includes participation in a training program and therapy sessions.

Probation with conditions
Spears has taken responsibility for her behavior, her lawyer Michael Goldstein said in a statement. “She has taken important steps to bring about positive change,” explained the lawyer. This led to the prosecutor’s office dropping the more serious charge. “Britney welcomes this ruling and is also grateful for the overwhelming support she has received.”
The singer was stopped by the highway police in California at the beginning of March and temporarily arrested. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
“Completely inexcusable”
A spokeswoman for the musician said in March that the incident was “regrettable” and “completely inexcusable.” “Britney will take the right steps, follow the law and then hopefully this can be the first step towards the long overdue change that needs to happen in Britney’s life.” A little later, according to her management, the singer voluntarily went to a treatment facility.
Worries about the pop icon
With hits like “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again,” Spears is one of the most successful artists in music history and enjoyed great success, especially in the 1990s and 2000s. In recent years, however, there have been frequent concerns about the mother of two’s condition. In 2008, following personal crises, she was placed under guardianship, giving her father control over her life and finances. The scheme was ended in 2021 after a high-profile court case. (hkl/sda/dpa)
