A Polish YouTuber collected the equivalent of 60 million euros in donations for children with cancer during a charity live stream. Goal scorer Robert Lewandowski, tennis star Iga Swiatek and many other celebrities from Poland also took part in the campaign, as the PAP news agency reported.
“It’s great, we have a miracle,” said the influencer Latwogang, whose real name is Patryk Garkowski, after the end of the nine-day live stream. His original goal of raising donations totaling the equivalent of 117,000 euros was exceeded many times over.
The impetus for the campaign was a touching piece that an eleven-year-old girl with cancer recorded with the rapper Bedoes 2115. In the piece “I’m still here (diss against cancer),” little Maja Mecan comes to terms with her illness. “Listen closely, cancer, because your days are numbered,” she raps into the microphone. “This is my third relapse and I have every reason to diss you here.”
Celebrities shave their hair in solidarity
The influencer Latwogang listened to this song for nine days while the appeal for donations ran and celebrities visited him in his apartment or joined in online. Some had their hair shaved off in front of the camera – in solidarity with children suffering from cancer. Tennis star Swiatek donated almost 24,000 euros (around 22,000 francs) and two tickets for Wimbledon.
The proceeds will now go to the “Cancer Fighters” foundation, which supports children and young people with cancer. The foundation announced on Platform X that it would set up a website on which the use of donated funds could be transparently tracked. (nil/sda/dpa)
