Nationwide restrictions on mobile phone use in Poland’s primary schools and preschools took effect Tuesday as students returned for the new academic year.
Under the new rules, primary school pupils are prohibited from using mobile phones and similar electronic devices during lessons, breaks and other school activities, Polish broadcaster TVP World reported.
Preschool children are not allowed to bring such devices to school.
The legislation provides exceptions when devices are needed for educational purposes, urgent communication with parents, immediate threats to health or life, and reasons related to health conditions, disabilities or special needs.
Upper-secondary schools are not automatically covered by the nationwide restrictions but may impose their own rules on electronic device use.
The measure forms part of the Polish government’s broader efforts to improve children’s digital well-being and limit their exposure to harmful online content.
Poland also considered restrictions earlier this year on social media access for children under the age of 15.
The legislation follows local initiatives, including a phone-free policy previously introduced in the southeastern city of Zamosc.
President Karol Nawrocki signed the legislation on July 30.
