Another building that bears his name: The airport in the city of Palm Beach in the US state of Florida was officially renamed “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” on Thursday. The airport abbreviation should be changed accordingly from PBI (Palm Beach International Airport) to DJT – the president’s initials. There should be no disruption to operational processes during a transition period. “Flight operations, routes, flight schedules and customer service are not affected,” it said on the airport’s website.
The name change of the airport north of Miami was “required by law,” the airport said. Governor Ron DeSantis, who is close to Trump, signed a corresponding law at the end of March. Trump’s private estate, Mar-a-Lago, is just a few minutes’ drive from the airport in Palm Beach.
In the United States, it is common practice for airports and other places to be named after former presidents. What is unusual, however, is that buildings are renamed while the president is still alive. Experts see parallels in Trump’s actions to the behavior of autocrats.
Trump everywhere: a strong need for recognition in his own country
The latest renaming joins a variety of other initiatives to make Trump’s name or face visible in Americans’ everyday lives. In the US capital Washington, huge banners with Trump’s face hang on government ministries. Trump also renamed the renowned Kennedy Center in Washington the “Trump Kennedy Center” amid public protest. However, this only lasted a short time: to the president’s annoyance, Trump’s name was removed again by court order in June.
The President also announced the Trump Gold Card – a type of visa that is available for payment of five million US dollars. Americans should be able to get medication more cheaply via the government website “TrumpRx”. They can also buy an annual pass to national parks where the president has been photographed.
Under certain conditions, citizens of Washington will also receive a passport depicting a stern-looking Trump. Most recently, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented new dollar bills with the signatures of the President and Bessent. (sda/dpa)
