After the severe double earthquake in Venezuela a week and a half ago, the number of officially confirmed deaths has risen to 3,342. There are also around 16,740 injured, said the President of the National Assembly, Jorge RodrÃguez, on the X platform. More than 17,000 people lost their homes as a result of the disaster.
Two devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 shook the country on June 24th, and further – much weaker – aftershocks followed. The consequences are particularly bad in the state of La Guaira.
In addition to emergency services from Venezuela, helpers from numerous other countries are also continuing to search for people buried in the rubble of collapsed houses. According to current information, 190 buildings were completely destroyed in the quake and at least 856 others were severely damaged, including several hospitals. Some bridges and roads have been completely impassable since then. (sda/dpa)
