In the US state of New Jersey, around 6,600 non-US citizens have been registered to vote before the 2024 election. The cause was a “serious software error” and fewer than 400 of them actually voted, Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill said on Tuesday. “I am appalled by the irresponsible failures that made this possible and by the lack of transparency shown by those responsible at the time,” said Sherrill.
The registrations therefore took place between June 2023 and June 2024 during the term of office of Sherrill’s Democratic predecessor Phil Murphy. According to Sherrill, about 6,600 people who said they were not U.S. citizens when applying for driver’s licenses and identification cards were still registered.
“When we identify a problem, we don’t hide it, we don’t deny it, we don’t invent conspiracies,” Sherill said. “We investigate it, we fix it and we inform the public.” She ordered people to be removed from the electoral rolls and initiated an investigation into the incident.
