According to the army, it was a foreign flying object that entered Latvian airspace as a result of “Russian electromagnetic warfare”. There was initially no further information about the origin and type of the missile.
In Latvia, the authorities had previously informed residents of several regions in the east of the country about a possible threat to the airspace. In two of them, the population was asked to seek protection. The alarm was canceled after the drone was shot down.
Repeated drone incidents
There have already been several incidents involving drones in Latvia as a result of the war in Ukraine. During Ukrainian attacks, misguided unmanned missiles with which Kiev had attacked targets in northwestern Russia had repeatedly penetrated the airspace of the Baltic state and crashed.
There was no major damage or injuries. However, the incidents triggered a political crisis in Latvia and led to a change of government. (dab/sda/dpa)
