In view of US claims on Greenland, Moscow is warning against ignoring Russian interests in the Arctic.
“All attempts to ignore Russia’s interests in the polar region, especially in the area of security, will not go unanswered and will have very far-reaching consequences,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in Moscow. This was reported by the state news agency Tass.
US President Donald Trump bases his demand for control over Greenland on, among other things, the activities of Russia and China in the region.
Criticism of the European military mission
Zakharova criticized the military reconnaissance mission of several European NATO states to better protect the autonomous island that belongs to Denmark. This is “the next provocation from the Western countries,” which also want to impose their order in this region of the world.
She said European states were promoting militarization of the polar region. They should be aware that they are endangering the security of Russia as an equal neighbor of the Arctic.
Russia, with its long northern coast on the Arctic Ocean, considers the Arctic to be its sphere of interest. It is increasingly using the region’s sea routes and expanding its military presence. (hkl/sda/dpa)
