In Iran, two men were executed again as part of a wave of executions in connection with the protests at the beginning of the year. The men were accused of being involved in the murder of police officers in the city of Isfahan during mass protests, the justice-affiliated Misan news agency reported.
To date, the Iranian judiciary has executed at least 27 men in the context of the protests and unrest. The winter demonstrations broke out at the end of December in response to the country’s economic crisis and quickly developed into mass protests against the authoritarian leadership. The state had them violently suppressed. Thousands of demonstrators were killed.
Human rights groups have been criticizing the rigorous use of the death penalty in Iran for years and accusing the authorities of using executions as a means of intimidation. According to Amnesty International, at least 2,159 people were executed in Iran last year – the highest number recorded since 1981. Death sentences were also carried out against suspected spies and political prisoners in connection with the Iran War. (sda/dpa)
