In southern Mexico, unidentified people killed the mayor of the town of San Miguel Amatitlán. Gunmen opened fire on José Ángel Bravo Martínez, the Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office said. The security authorities launched a search for the perpetrators and deployed additional emergency services to the region.
Bravo’s party PAN condemned the attack. “An attack on the life of a democratically elected official represents a direct attack on peace, institutions and the will of the people,” it said in a statement. “We must not accept these incidents as normal and not allow fear to affect political participation and public service. Justice and the rule of law must prevail.”
Politicians in Mexico are repeatedly victims of violence
The background to the crime was initially unclear. However, in Mexico, mayors and community representatives repeatedly fall victim to attacks. Organized crime is often behind it.
Because of the Soccer World Cup, which opened on Thursday in Mexico City, the security situation in the Latin American country recently came into focus again. In February, more than 70 people were killed in fighting in Mexico following the arrest and death of a powerful drug lord. (sda/dpa)
